  • Description

West German Defence Minister Strauss, accompanied by his wife, arrived in a German "Viking" plane at the Royal Air Force station, Odiham, U.K., Sept 7, en route to the R.A.F. display at Farnborough. He was welcomed by the German Air Attache, Colonel Fischer, the Naval Attache, Commander Zimmerman, and Press Attache Scherer.

At the Farnborough display, Herr Strauss was in a party which included United States Air Force secretary Dudley Sharp and Sir George Dowty. He said - after seeing a performance by the vertical take-off Short SC-1 research machine - Britain was the most advanced nation in this branch of aviation. "It is a milestone in the history of aviation and also of mastering nature." He felt that NATO countries needed planes not dependent on runways in the event of military operations.
