  • Description

A group of students demonstrated outside the Singapore High Commission in London today (Sunday, January 24th) against the alleged detention of political prisoners in Singapore.

Some shouted slogans against the Singapore Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. An effigy of the Prime Minister was burnt outside the High Commission.

The demonstrators handed out pamphlets claiming there were at least 100 political detainees in Singapore, many of them detained for more than seven years.

The pamphlets claimed that detainees received brutal treatment. They claimed electronic gadgets were used to break the detainees physically and mentally.

Pamphlets, issued by a group calling themselves Malaysians and Singaporeans for a Democratic Society, called for restoration of democratic rights and civil liberties in Singapore and the release of all political detainees held in brutal and inhuman conditions in specially designed prisons.

Other pamphlets named some alleged political prisoners and detailed some alleged conditions under which they were held.
