Background: CARS THAT HAVE MADE THE NAME OF SIR HENRY ROYCE FAMOUS PARADED TODAY IN THE VILLAGE NEAR PETERBOROUGH WHERE ROYCE WAS BORN A HUNDRED YEAR AGO. AN ARISTOCRATIC TURN-OUT PAID HOMAGE TO THE GREAT ENGINEER; IT WAS LED BY ONE OF THE VERY FIRST CARS TURNED OUT BY A TEAM INSPIRED THEN - AS IT HAS BEEN EVER SINCE - BY ROYCE.

"THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD" - THAT DESCRIPTION SO OFTEN GIVEN TO THE ROLLS-ROYCE CAR IS RARELY QUESTIONED. THE MAGIC OF THE NAME HAS ENDURED SINCE 1904 WHEN HENRY ROYCE BUILT A CAR WHICH WAS RECOGNIZED AS UNIQUE EVEN IN THOSE DAYS. AND THIS ARISTOCRAT OF THE ROAD HAS RETAINED ITS REPUTATION EVER SINCE - NO OTHER CAR HAS SUCCEEDED IN MATCHING THE QUALITIES OF THE ROLLS-ROYCE.

BUT THE WORLD-FAMOUS CAR IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE LEGACY LEFT BY HENRY ROYCE. MANY OF TODAY'S JET AIRCRAFT - THE COMET, BOEING 707, THE TRIDENT - ARE POWERED BY ENGINES DEVELOPED BY THE COMPANY HE FOUNDED. THE ENGINE USED TO POWER THE SPITFIRES AND HURRICANES OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN WAS A DIRECT DESCENDENT OF THE ONE WHICH WON BRITAIN THE SCHNEIDER TROPHIES OF 1929 AND 1931. ALLOYS WHICH HENRY ROYCE FOUND UNSUITABLE WERE TURNED OVER TO METALLURGICAL EXPERTS WITH THE RESULT THAT A WHOLE NEW RANGE - OF IMMENSE VALUE TO ENGINEERING EVER SINCE - BECAME AVAILABLE.

THE MAN WHO RESPONSIBLE FOR NEW STANDARDS OF TECHNICAL SKILL IMAGINATION AND INVENTION WAS BORN ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO ON 28 MARCH 1963. APART FROM AN UNCOMPLETED APPRENTICESHIP WITH THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, HENRY ROYCE HAD NO FORMAL EDUCATION AS AN ENGINEER. IN FACT, AS A YOUNG BOY HE WAS POOR AND WITHOUT SCHOOLING. IN HIS MEMORIAL WINDOW IN WESTMINSTER ABBEY HE IS DESCRIBED AS "ENGINEER", BUT HIS BIOGRAPHER DESCRIBED HIM MORE ACCURATELY AS "MECHANIC", A LABEL ROYCE HIMSELF PREFERRED TO USE. HE WAS PROBABLY THE GREATEST MECHANIC OF ALL WITH AN UNMATCHED INSIGHT FOR MECHANICAL RIGHTNESS. NOTHING WAS EVER 'GOOD ENOUGH', AND EVERYTHING IN HIS CARS AND ENGINES WERE AS PERFECT AS THEY COULD POSSIBLY BE.

ROYCE PRODUCED THE ENGINE FOR HIS FIRST CAR, A TWO-CYLINDER UNIT OF 10 H.P., IN 1903. THE DESIGNER'S EXTRAORDINARY MECHANICAL SKILL ENABLED HIM TO DEVISE WAYS OF MAKING PRINCIPLES WHICH WORKED BADLY ON OTHER CARS WORK WELL ON HIS. CHARLES ROLLS, A YOUNGER SON OF LORD LLANGATTOCKM, WAS INTRODUCED TO THE CAR AND ITS DESIGNER AND IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZED THEIR GENIUS. WITH ROLLS SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT INCORPORATED IN THE 1905 MODEL, THE FAMOUS FIRM WITH THE "RR" MONOGRAM BEGAN ITS SUCCESSFUL STORY. FOUR MODELS WERE OFFERED IN THE CATOLOGUE - CHASSIS ONLY WITH THE BODIES BUILT BY ANOTHER FIRM.

LATE IN 1906 CAME THE CAR WHICH SPREAD THE NAME OF ROLL-ROYCE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD - THE SILVER GHOST. THE CATALOGUE DESCRIBED IT: "THE STEERING, BRAKES AND REGULATION OF SPEED ARE ALL THAT REQUIRE ATTENTIONS; THE REST WILL LOOK AFTER ITSELF. THE ENGINE IS SO ACCURATELY BALANCED, AND THE CARBURATION SO PERFECT, THAT WHEN THE CAR IS STANDING STILL IS AN ENTIRE ABSENCE OF NOISE AND VIBRATION, WHICH MAKES IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL WHETHER THE ENGINE IS REVOLVING OR NOT.

THE SIX-CYLINDER GHOST ENGINE WAS INCREASED IN SIZE FROM 7.036 LITRES TO 7.428 LITRES IN 1908 WHEN PRODUCTION MOVED FROM MANCHESTER TO DERBY, THE NEW ENGINE WAS USED IN THE AMBULANCES AND ARMOURED CARS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR. IT REMAINED IN PRODUCTION FOR A RUN OF 19 YEARS - AN INDICATION HOW FAF AHEAD OF HIS TIME ROYCE WAS TO PRODUCE THE SILVER GHOST IN 1906. THIS ENGINE AND CHASIS WERE SUCCEEDED IN 1925 BY THE PHANTOM, AND LATER BY THE SILVER WRAITH IN 1939. SINCE 1949 ROLLS-ROYCE, BEGINNING WITH THE SILVER DAWN HAVE SUPPLIED A NUMBER OF THEIR CARS WITH BODYWORK.

THE MONOGRAM "RR" ON THE FAMOUS ROLLS-ROYCE BONNET WAS ORIGINALLY PICKED OUT IN RED: SINCE ROYCE'S DEATH IN 1933 IT HAS APPEARED IN BLACK. THE DISTINCTIVE BONNET REQUIRES FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP. THE METAL SURFACES HAVE TO BE BEATEN BY HAND AND TO OFFSET THE OPTICAL EFFECT OF STRAIGHT LINES APPEARING CURVED, EVERY ONE OF THE APPARENTLY STRAIGHT SURFACES IN THE ROLLS-ROYCE BONNET IS IN FACT A SUBTLE CURVE.

MANY OTHER ENGINES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY THE COMPANY FINDING READY MARKETS ALL OVER THE WORLD. THEIR PRODUCTION IS BUT ONE ASPECT OF A PROGRESSIVE COMPANY WHICH STILL OWES MUCH OF ITS SUCCESS TO A MAN BORN POOR BUT BRILLIANT 100 YEARS AGO - A GENIUS CALLED HENRY ROYCE.
