President Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh won overwhelming support for his martial law rule in a general referendum on Monday (30 May). His 19-point programme to put the desperately poor and disaster-prone country firmly on its feet will now be implemented in earnest.
SYNOPSIS: There was un unexpectly high turnout of voters in the capital, Dacca, and all the others polling areas throughout the country. Almost 99 percent of the voters supported the President.
The 38 million voters were asked to answer"yes or no" to the question "do you have confidence in President Major-General Ziaur Rahman and in the policies and programmes enunciated by bim"? The government had launched a huge publicity programme in the controlled press, radio and television. and the President toured the country to seek support for his policies. He took over the leadership in April, and has promised general elections late next year.
The President now has a huge mandat??? to carry out his socio-economic programme. It gives priority to agricultural development to try and make Bangladesh self-sufficient in food.
