    Background: SPAIN, BILBAO

Spanish shipyard workers fought with police and barricaded access roads to the Basque port city of Bilbao on 11/10 - the second day of a protest against planned lay-offs in the shipbuilding industry. The demonstrators set fire to barricades they had built, and burned a municipal bus, bringing traffic to a halt on several roads. Riot police used smoke bombs and fired rubber bullets into a factory where the workers had taken refuge. There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests. Four policemen and a press photographer were injured two days earlier when about 1,000 protesting shipyard workers clashed with police in the northern port of Gijon. Spain's Socialist government has drawn up a programme to restructure. The shipbuilding industry. According to the plan, 17,000 of the industry's 40,000 workers will become redundant by 1986.
