Background: In Buenos Aires, Juan Abal Medina, former Secretary-General of Argentinian President Juan Peron's Justicialist movement, survived an assassination attempt on Saturday (23 March) morning.

Medina escaped with a bullet wound in his left arm as gunmen fired at him from a passing car and threw two hand grenades as he entered his apartment building.

The 28-year-old Medina was the latest target in recent incidents between feuding left and right wing factions of Argentina's ruling Peronist movement.

Medina had been responsible for the organisation of Peronist Youth movements during the closing years of the military rule which preceded General Peron's recent return to power.

He had become closely identified with the so-called "revolutionary tendency" or extreme left wing of the broadly based Justicialist movement.

The attack was apparently in retaliation for the shooting of a right wing leader only hours before. It was the second time Medina had been the target for assassins.

In November, 1973, he was deliberately run over by a car and his right leg broken. Although not a member of any political grouping at present, Medina is reported to have been asked recently to act as a go-between among left-wing and right-wing factions within the Peronist movement.
