  • Description

MORE THAN 150 DIFFERENT TYPES OF AIRCRAFT WERE DEMONSTRATED AT THE PARIS AIR SHOW AT LE BOURGET YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). AMERICA WAS THE LARGEST EXHIBITOR, WITH 30 MODELS IN THE AIR. BRITAIN SHOWED 15 TYPES AND RUSSIA DEMONSTRATED SIX OF THE AIRCRAFT SENT TO PARIS.

THE ALOUETTE-3 HELICOPTER WAS ONLY ONE OF THE GROUP OF HELICOPTERS SHOWN BY THE FRENCH SUD-AVIATION FACTORY. THIS VERSATILE HELICOPTER, WHICH IS IN SERVICE ALL OVER THE WORLD, SEATS SEVEN. IN THE DISPLAY IT WAS FOLLOWED BY THE SUPER FRELON, WHICH IS CAPABLE OF CARRYING 36 PASSENGERS, OR CAN BE ADAPTED AS A FREIGHT CARRIER.

THE SOVIET UNION SHOWED ITS MYASISHCHEV V-10 HELICOPTER -- KNOWN AS THE "FLYING CRANE". IT CAN LIFT A PREFABRICATED HOUSE BETWEEN ITS UNDERCARRIAGE LEGS. IT IS ONLY ONE OF A FAMILY OF HELICOPTERS THAT ARE SAID TO BE THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.

AMONG THE TRANSPORT PLANES DEMONSTRATED WAS THE FRENCH BREGUET-941. THIS IS CAPABLE OF TRAVELLING AT 500 KMS (310 MILES) PER HOUR AND CAN LAND ON AN AIRSTRIP LESS THAN 150 YARDS LONG.

THE MYSTERE-20 WAS ONE OF THE MEDIUM RANGE PASSENGERS JET AIRLINERS ON SHOW. IT IS ALSO A PRODUCT OF THE SUD-AVIATION COMPANY.

THE RUSSIANS WERE SHOWING AT LE BOURGET FOR THE FIRST TIME. ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THEIR DISPLAY WAS THE TU-134, THEIR SOVIET VERSION OF THE BUS-STOP JET WHICH WILL RIVAL BRITAIN'S BAC-III AND AMERICA'S DC-9 AND BOEING-737.

THE UNITED STATES SHOWED ITS B-58 HUSTLER, WHICH HAS BEEN SUPPLIED TO THE AIR FORCE. THIS DELTA-WING JET, SAID TO BE THE FASTEST NUCLEAR BOMBER IN AMERICA'S FORCES, MADE ITS FIRST FLIGHT IN 1956. IT CAN PENETRATE TO ITS TARGET AT TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND.

LAST TUESDAY, ONE OF THESE BOMBERS CRASHED AT THE AIR SHOW, KILLING THE THREE OCCUPANTS. AN AIRCRAFT OF THE SAME TYPE, THEN STILL ON THE SECRET LIST, CRASHED DURING THE 1961 AIR SHOW AT LE BOURGET.

THE PRIDE OF THE FRENCH AIR FORCE, THEIR MIRAGE III-C FIGHTER AND THE MIRAGE-IV BOMBER, WERE AMONG THE MOST POPULAR AIRCRAFT ON DISPLAY.

THE FRENCH ALSO SHOWED THE BALZAC VERTICAL TAKE-OFF FIGHTER, WHICH IS BEING DEVELOPED BY G.A.M. DASSAULT, THE COMPANY WHO ALSO BUILD THE MIRAGE FIGHTERS.

FROM BRITAIN CAME THE H.P.-16, AN EXPERIMENTAL PLANE BUILT BY BRISTOL SIDDELEY.

SWEDEN WAS ANOTHER EXHIBITING NATION. THE SAAB RANGE ON SHOW INCLUDED THE "93 DRAKEN", A DELTA WING PURSUIT FIGHTER. THESE PLANES ARE EQUIPPED WITH ROLLS ROYCE AVON ENGINES.
