  • Description

A Pakistani Government delegations arrived in Dacca on Tuesday (6 July) for trade talks with the Bangladesh Government. It was the fist trade delegation from Pakistan to visit Dacca, since the two countries established diplomatic relations last year.

SYNOPSIS: As the Pakistani delegation arrived the Bangladesh Government announced the visit had a far wider significance than trade. Until 1971, Bangladesh was the eastern wing of Pakistan. Then, aided by the Indian Army, Bangladesh won a bitter liberation war to emerge an independent state. Officials to the trade talks said that by increasing trade, it was hoped to bring both countries much closer together politically. The Indian Government's attitude towards Bangladesh has changed since the liberation war. Relations have cooled and Bangladesh officials say it remains to be seen how India reacts t the new links with Pakistan.

On the trade question, the Bangladesh Government said there is enormous scope to increase co-operation. It said the economies of the two nations complemented each other because of their previous long association before eastern wing broke away to form Bangladesh. Pakistan plans to provide rice, wheat, cotton and clothing in return for jute, paper and other goods.
