    ATHLETES FROM 13 SOUTH PACIFIC COUNTRIES THRONGED INTO PORT MORESBY, NEW GUINEA, FOR THE THIRD SOUTH PACIFIC GAMES.

    THE 10,000 POPULATION OF PORT MORESBY WAS SWELLED TO 16,000 FOR THE GAMES. THE TOWN'S HOTELS AND GUEST HOUSES WERE SUPPLEMENTED BY TEMPORARY LONGHOUSES TO PUT UP THE VISITORS FOR THE 10 DAYS OF THE GAMES.

    THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF KENT, ON A TOUR OF SOUTH EAST ASIA, WERE THERE FOR THE OPENING. AFTER MEETING THE PEOPLE THEY WATCHED AS THE TEAMS FROM EACH COUNTRY PARADED WITH FLAGS.

    THEY SPENT SOME TIME CHATTING TO THE CONTESTANTS, AND THEN THE DUKE OF KENT DECLARED THE GAMES OPEN.

    APART FROM THE ATHLETICS AT THE STADIUM, PORT MORESBY NOW HAS A NEW OLYMPIC-SIZED SWIMMING POOL. ESPECIALLY BUILT FOR THE GAMES, WHERE EVENTS TOOK PLACE. THERE WERE ALSO TENNIS, TABLE TENNIS, BOXING, JUDO, YACHTING, SOCCER, RUGBY, BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL, AND WEIGHTLIFTING COMPETITIONS AT OTHER VENUES IN PORT MORESBY, AND GOLF COMPETITIONS AT LAE.
