LAVER HAD JUST DEFEATED AMERICAN ARTHUR ASHE IN THEIR SEMI-FINAL OF THE WIMBLEDON MEN'S SINGLES. ASHE, HIMSELF, SAID IT WAS A TRAGIC DECISION NOT TO HAVE AN OPEN DAVIS CUP.

    THE TOP-SEEDED LAVER WAS FORCED TO USE ALL HIS LEFT-HANDED POWER AND EXPERIENCE TO SUBDUE A DETERMINED SEMI-FINAL CHALLENGE FROM ASHE, WHO IS UNITED STATES OPEN CHAMPION.

    THE 30-YEAR-OLD QUEENSLANDER WON 2-6, 6-2, 9-7, 6-0 IN A BATTLE THAT LASTED 100 MINUTES.

    LAVER WAS IN TOP FORM FOR THE FOURTH SET AND FINISHED WITH SIX STRAIGHT GAMES AFTER ASHE DOUBLE-FAULTED AT MATCH POINT.

    LAVER NOW MEETS THE 1967 TITLEHOLDER, JOHN NEWCOMBE, IN AN ALL-AUSTRALIAN FINAL ON SATURDAY (5 JULY).
