  • Description

A memorial service was held on Wednesday (10 April) in the UNESCO building in Beirut for three Palestinian leaders killed a year ago during an Israeli commando raid on the Lebanese capital.

The commando operation took place on 10 April, 1973. Israeli troops, some dressed as "hippies", landed on a beach outside Beirut, and drove into the city in cars which had been hired for them a few days earlier by agents working for them. Once in the city, the Israelis headed for a luxury apartment building where the Palestinians were living, They burst into their apartment and machine-gunned Mohammed Yussef Najir, Kamal Adwan and Kamal Nasser to death.

Mr. Najir - code-named Abu Yussef - was one of the founders of the Al Fatah movement and regarded as second-in-command to Yasser Arafat at the time. Mr. Adwan was a fatah spokesman and on the executive of the Palestine Liberation. Organisation, and Mr. Nasser, a PLO spokesman was widely known in the Arab world as a poet.

The leader of the Fatah movement, Mr. Yasser Arafat, attended Wednesday's memorial, long with ambassadors to Lebanon from many Arab countries and the former Lebanese Prime Minister, Mr. Saeb Salam.
