  • Description

President Kaunda of Zambia said on Friday (25 May) that two Canadian girls killed by a Zambian sentry at the victoria Falls on May 15, had been sent to their deaths by Rhodesia for propaganda purposes.

At one point, the Zambian leader broke down and wept as he made a sharp counter-attack on the Rhodesians at the opening of a powerful new radio station in Lusaka, supplied by the People's Republic of China.

The two girls and two American companions, one of whom was wounded, had been "shepherded to their deaths", he said.

President Kaunda said the world had to know the truth behind the killings in the same way it must hear the truth of bombing and mining of Zambian villages along the border with Rhodesia.

He said the shootings were staged by Rhodesia to coincide with the Zambian visit of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kurt Waldheim.

Zambia had the duty to tell the truth, he said, as he announced the formal start of a Zambian external broadcasting service in a number of languages, including Afrikaans, Portuguese, Zhosa, English an Shona.

This film includes several excerpts from President Kaunda's address, including his apology to his audience for weeping and his condemnation of the Rhodesian white minority regime as "downright savages". A transcript of his statements on the film follows:
