  • Description

A special Ethiopian court martial, set up to try the country's former officials and military leaders, held its first brief session in Addis Ababa on Tuesday (December 10).

Before the court was a former member of the Imperial Bodyguard, Colonel Adellah Katew -- the first of 170 ousted leaders currently awaiting trial in the cellars of the Grand Palace in Addis Ababa.

As the hearing began in the ornate throne room of the palace, there was speculation that former Emperor Haile Selassie might himself be called upon to face a trial by Ethiopia's new rulers.

The following day, Wednesday, the head of Ethiopia's military government, General Teferi Benti, discussed the future of the former Emperor at his first press conference. He told newsmen that there was no question of the 82-year-old Haile Selassie being allowed to leave the country, and accused him of committing a number of crimes against the nation.

As to whether the deposed monarch would be put on trial, General Teferi said this was up to the Ethiopian people to decide.
