SYNOPSIS: In the South Pacific, the French continued their series of atomic tests with the detonation of what was called a "middle power" device on Saturday. It was part of a six to eight test series due to evaluated weaponry schedule for service before 1976. Saturday's device, which was in the region of half a megaton, is intended for use in nuclear submarines.

There has been bitter criticism to the latest French tests in New Zealand. Prime Minister Keith Holyoake last month reminded the French that atmospheric tests, like this one, conflicted with the 1963 partial test ban treaty. But the French claim fall-out is limited and expressed themselves well satisfied with the tests.
