  • Description

GREEK-CYPRIOT STUDENTS IN NICOSIA ARE DONATING THEIR BLOOD IN ORDER THAT THE BLOOD BANK OF THE NICOSIA GENERAL HOSPITAL IS KEPT WELL UP TO STRENGTH.

THE HOSPITAL IS INCREASING ITS USUAL AMOUNT OF BLOOD KEPT IN STOCK, IN ANTICIPATION OF A WORSENING SITUATION, AND POSSIBLY A WAR, IN CYPRUS. IN THE EVENT OF A WAR, THEY MUST OBVIOUSLY HAVE A LARGE AMOUNT OF BLOOD READILY AVAILABLE.

THE BLOOD IS KEPT UNDER REFRIGERATION, BUT EVEN SO, IT WILL ONLY LAST FOR ABOUT 14 DAYS. SO A CONSTANT SUPPLY IS REQUIRED. PLASMA, WHICH IS SEPARATED FROM WHOLE BLOOD, IS DRIED AND LASTS SEVERAL MONTHS. HUMAN PLASMA IS VITALLY IMPORTANT IN TREATING CASUALTIES SUFFERING FROM EXTREME SHOCK.
