  • Description

THREE WOMEN WERE KILLED AND MANY INJURED WHEN TREMORS ROCKED THE SMALL GREEK ISLAND OF ALONNYSSOS. MORE THAN A HUNDRED HOUSES COLLAPSED AND MOST OF THE OTHERS WERE SEVERELY DAMAGED. THE TREMORS LASTED THREE DAYS DURING WHICH MOST OF THE ISLANDERS CAMPED OUT IN THE OPEN LASHED BY STRONG WINDS AND RAIN. TENTS, BLANKETS, FOOD AND MEDICINE WERE RUSHED TO THE ISLAND BUT OWING TO HIGH SEAS THE SUPPLIES ONLY REACHED ALONNYSSOS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

ALONNYSSOS IS ONE OF THE ISLANDS IN THE NORTHERN GROUP OF AEGEAN SPORADES ISLANDS. IT RECEIVES SUPPLIES FROM THE MAINLAND BY BOAT ONLY ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK. TWO EARTH TREMORS WERE REGISTERED IN ATHENS AT 6 AND 6 1/4 ON THE 12 DEGREE RICHTER SCALE. ALTHOUGH THESE READINGS COMPARED WITH THOSE RECORDED AT SKOPJE IN JULY '63, ONLY ALONNYSSOS WAS AFFECTED. THERE WAS INITIAL PANIC WHEN THE FIRST TREMOR STRUCK AND PEOPLE RAN INTO THE STREETS IN TERROR. IT WAS THEN THAT THE WOMEN WERE KILLED BY FALLING STONEWORK.

SUPPLIES PROVIDED BY THE GOVERNMENT, THE RED CROSS, AND OTHER WELFARE ORGANISATIONS WERE ASSEMBLED ON THE MAINLAND, BUT BECAUSE OF HEAVY SEAS IT WAS ONLY YESTERDAY WHEN THE RESCUE SHIP REACHED THE ISLAND. FIELD KITCHENS AND TENTS WERE SET UP FOR THE EARTHQUAKE REFUGEES. THE POLICE CHIEF AND LOCAL GOVERNOR INSPECTED THE DAMAGE AND TOLD THE ISLANDER TO SAVE WHAT THEY COULD FROM THEIR HOMES.

IT HAS A HEART RENDING SIGHT FOR THE CAMERAMAN, FOR MANY OF THE PEOPLE HAD LOST ALL THEY POSSESSED IN THE EARTHQUAKE. NOW, THEIR THREE-DAY ORDEAL OVER, THE PEOPLE ARE SALVAGING WHAT THEY CAN AND PREPARING TO START AGAIN.
