  • Description

The new French Government cabinet posed for its first news photographs in Paris on Friday (April 13) -- shorly after winning its first vote of confidence in the 490-member National Assembly the previous night. The vote, for a programme of social reform outlined by Prime Minister Pierre Messmer, was 254 to 206 in favour.

The pro-Government majority was almost inevitable, said news agency reports, because the Gaullist-and-allies Government kept an overall margin of some 60 seats in the general elections last month (March). But at the same time, according to the reports, it was a definite morale-booster for the cabinet and Government.

SYNOPSIS: The new French Government Gaullist Cabinet, finally complete following last month's general elections, posed for its first news photographs in Paris on Friday -- shortly after winning its first vote of confidence in the National Assembly the previous evening. President Georges Pompidou posed with them.

The vote of confidence came when members of the National Assembly voted in favour of a social reform programme put forward by Prime Minister Pierre Messmer. The result expected, after the Gaullists and their allies won a majority of the seats in the elections. But it was still -- politically -- a morale booster for the Cabinet and the Government, according to news agency reports.
