  • Description

Israeli Foreign Minister, Moshe Dayan arrived in Paris on Monday (29 January) for an official two-day visit. The Israeli-Egyptian peace negotiations were at the centre of discussions between Mr. Dayan and French officials.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Dayan's first engagement was at the Quai d'Orsay, where he met the French Foreign Minister, M. Jean Francois-Poncet. Mr. Dayan's visit to France is the first by an Israeli Cabinet Minister since Mr. Menachem Begin became Prime Minister nearly two years ago.

Both French and Israeli officials privately said the visit would permit an exchange of views, but neither country is expected to move from their different positions on how to achieve peace in the Middle East. Relations between the two countries have been cool for over a decade, following France's switch towards a pro-Arab policy during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Until then, France and Israel's main arms supplier. In an interview on French television last Friday (26 January) Mr. Dayan said that France's view that a Middle East peace settlement should be an overall arrangement with Arab nations was unrealistic. After his meeting with M. Francois-Poncet, Mr. Dayan met the French Prime Minister, Raymond Barre. Reuters reported French officials as claiming Mr. Dayan had deplored Israel's cool relations with France.
