  • Description

Thousands of young Icelanders -- later disowned as a "deplorable mob" by their own government -- besieged the British Embassy in Reykjavik for three hours on Thursday. They pelted the building with stones, breaking every window in the Embassy, to register their own protest against the use of British warships to protect trawlers fishing inside Iceland's 50-mile limit.

A police spokesman said part of the crowd tried to break into the building but had been stopped by the police cordon.

In a tough British reaction, Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-home summoned the Icelandic Charge d'Affaires to the Foreign Ministry to express grave concern over the incident. He said he expected Iceland to pay full compensation for the damage -- which is estimated to cost thousands of pounds.

SYNOPSIS: The protesters besieged the Embassy for three hours, pelting it with stones and smashing every window in the building. Police, although unable to prevent the stone-throwing, claimed they stopped the demonstrators forcing an entry into the building. The Ambassador and four members of his staff were inside the Embassy throughout the siege. Later British Foreign Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Home formally protested at the incident and demanded that Iceland pay compensation for the damage-estimated at thousand of pounds.
