    REPRESENTATIVES OF 24 AMERICAN COUNTRIES AND 22 INDUSTRIALISE NATIONS WERE IN CONFERENCE LAST WEEK IN RABAT TO PROMOTE INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS ON THE AFRICAN CONTINENT.

    THE CLOSING SESSION TOOK PLACE AT THE RABAT HILTON HOTEL LAST FRIDAY (31 OCTOBER). THROUGHOUT THE PRECEDING WEEK INDIVIDUAL NEGOTIATIONS HAD BEEN CONDUCTED IN PRIVATE ROOMS OF THE HOTEL BETWEEN BUYERS AND SELLERS OF GOODS AND SERVICES.

    THE ORGANISERS CLAIM THAT THIS FIRST AFRICAN "INDUSTRIAL MARKET" HAD LED TO SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS TOWARDS ESTABLISHING SEVERAL NEW INDUSTRIES. MANY DELEGATES ALSO EXPRESSED THEIR SATISFACTION WITH CONTACTS MADE DURING THE WEEK.

    MORE THAN 160 INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS REVIEWED BY THE CONFERENCE WHICH WAS STAGED BY THE AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK, THE U.N. ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR AFRICA AND THE U.N. INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION. THE "MARKET" BROUGHT TOGETHER SPONSORS OF PROJECTS THROUGHOUT AFRICA WITH POTENTIAL INVESTORS FROM INDUSTRIALISED STATES. INVESTORS CAME FROM EUROPE AND ASIA INCLUDING COUNTRIES SUCH AS BRITAIN, WEST GERMANY, ITALY AND FRANCE WHO TRADITIONALLY INVEST IN AFRICA, AS WELL AS NEWCOMERS LIKE JAPAN AND EAST EUROPEAN STATES LIKE POLAND, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, RUMANIA, HUNGARY AND YUGOSLAVIA. THE PROJECTS DISCUSSED RANGED IN SIZE FROM A 200 MILLION DOLLARS (83 MILLION STERLING) STEEL MILL FOR CONGO-KINSHASA TO A CROCODILE LEATHER PLANT FOR GABON. AMONG THE 1240 PARTICIPANTS WERE 23 PRIVATE BANKERS, 12 AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANKS AND MANY INDIVIDUAL BUSINESSMEN WHO MET AFRICAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND PRIVATE ENTREPRENEURS.

    THE AIM WAS TO BRING ABOUT -- THROUGH DIRECT CONTACTS -- FOREIGN PARTICIPATION IN THE FORM OF EQUITY, SUPPLY EQUIPMENT, CREDIT FACILITIES, KNOW-HOW AND MANAGEMENT. TALKS INITIATED DURING THE CONFERENCE WERE TO BE FOLLOWED UP LATER UNDER THE AUSPICES OF U.N.I.D.O. UNTIL CONTRACTS WERE SIGNED.
