Background: DRINK A PUB DRY! THAT'S A BOAST OFTEN MADE, BUT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT VERY RARELY ACHIEVED. BUT IN NOTTINGHAM ON THURSDAY, LOCAL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS MADE THE BOAST AND ACHIEVED THE IMPOSSIBLE BY DRINKING A LOCAL PUBLIC HOUSE TOTALLY DRY.

IT WAS ALL PART OF THE UNIVERSITY'S OCTOBER CARNIVAL RAG, AND THERE WAS NO LACK OF YOUNG MEN WITH A THIRST TO HELP RELIEVE THE TRAVELLER'S REST OF ITS ENTIRE STOCK OF BEER. IN FACT, SOME TWO THOUSAND STUDENTS QUEUED UP FOR THEIR PINT OR TWO.

DESPITE THE MOTIVE, THE PUBLIC HOUSE AND THE STUDENTS HAD TO ABIDE BY ENGLAND'S LICENSING LAWS, AND THE TEST OF INTESTINAL FORTITUDE WAS HELD OVER TWO SESSIONS, WHEN THE PUBLIC HOUSE WAS PERMITTED TO SERVE LIQUOR.

DURING THE EIGHT HOUR ATTEMPT THE STUDENTS CONSUMED 100 GALLONS OF BITTER AND 75 GALLONS OF MILD - THAT'S ROUGHLY FOUR PINTS OF BEER PER DRINKER. HOWEVER, NOT ALL GOT A FAIR SHARE; SEVERAL ARMED WITH SMALL MILK CHURNS AND BUCKETS WERE ABLE TO SLAKE THEIR THIRST MOST ADEQUATELY.

BY CLOSING TIME AT TEN THIRTY THAT NIGHT, THE 175 GALLONS OF BEER HAD BEEN CONSUMED TO THE LAST, LAST DROP. THE COST TO THE STUDENTS ... ABOUT GBP300 STERLING - AND THEY CONSIDERED IT WAS MONEY WELL spent.
