  • Description

Pope Paul set a fuel saving example by suing a horse-drawn carriage for his traditional drive to the statue of the virgin Mary in the Piazza di Spagna on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday (December 8).

He normally travels by car for the ceremony but this weekend he observed Italy's weekend motoring ban although he still had an escort of police motorcyclists.

After the drive int he open carriage, 76 years old Pope Paul said he'd enjoyed travelling in this "old and modest but still honourable form of transport."
In a sometimes humorous speech to four thousand pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square for the traditional Sunday midday address, the Pope said, "It was not, of course a triumphal journey, but a cordial one." He had been followed on the drive by dozens of small boys on bicycles and cheered by throngs of onlookers.
