    INTRODUCTION: Former Lebanese President, M. Camille chamoun, has said he would be opposed to the presence of 'armed Palestinians' at peace talks aimed at settling the Middle East situation, M. Chamoun, the rightwing Christian leader, was speaking in Damascus on Saturday (17th September) during his visit for talks with Syrian government leaders. The statement came only a day before PLO leader, Yasser Arafat, asked that a meeting of the PLO Central Council in Damascus be postponed. Mr. Arafat in a letter to the Council, explained that he would not be able to attend because of the 'situation in southern Lebanon.'
    SYNOPSIS: Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdel-Helin Khaddam hosted the talks with the former Lebanese President during his three-day visit. M Chamoun was invited to express his views on possible peace talks in Geneva which have been suggested by the United States, following the recent Middle East tour by US Secretary of State, Cyrus Vance. Mr. Chamoun, who heads the right wing Christian Party in Lebanon, described the discussions as 'fruitful and useful.' However, he said his party would be opposed to the presence at Geneva of 'armed Palestinians who give the ??? excuse to attack Lebanon,' although other Palestinians would be welcomed. Syrian Foreign Minister Khadem is to meet US President Jimmy Carter in Washington on 28 September. Official sources, in Damascus, say they will discuss the latest American attempts to ??? negotiations between Israel and Arab states.
