  • Description

Bulgarian wrestlers go to the Olympic Games at Munich this month with hopes of doing at least as well as they did in the last Olympics at Mexico City. In 1968 they took home two gold medals, both for events in Greco-Roman division.

This year the Bulgarians predict most opposition will come from the Soviet Union, Turkey, Japan and Iran.

In keeping with its role as one of Bulgaria's most popular sports, wrestling has received an extra boost with the opening of a modern training centre at the mountain resort of Belmeken. The centre is described as the best-equipped sports complex in Bulgaria.

The chief hope for success at Munich is Peter kirov, who won the Flyweight gold medal at Mexico City, and was also World Champion in 1970 and 1971. He managed only third place in this year's European Championship - but was said to have eased his training programme to allow him to complete studies at university. Kirov now says he is back to his best, and is confident of winning at Munich.

A blow to Bulgarian hopes was the withdrawal this month of heavyweight wrestler, Boyan Radev - who won Olympic gold medals in both 1964 and 1968. Poor health forced his withdrawal: he apparently suffers form an ulcer.
