Background: About 5,000 people took part in the funeral of 19 year old Giorgina Masi, a left-wing feminist killed during last Thursday's riots in Rome. At first, the grief stricken relatives had demanded a private funeral celebration and had urged the public not to turn a moment of sorrow "into a political happening". However, yesterday the family let it be known that "all friends, feminists and those sharing their grief" could participate in the funeral procession.
It is still not known who actually shot the girl. Police claim that a student extremist, aiming for the police, accidentally shot Giorgina.
However, students claim that plain clothes policemen shot her. A woman wounded at the same time and on the same spot, and now in hospital, claims that she saw a uniformed policeman shoot.
From friday through sunday, feminists and student friends of Giorgina kept vigil on Garibaldi bridge, laying flowers on the spot where the girl fell (pls see film shot by Enzo on the 14th, as would be good idea to intercut with funeral footage). On Saturday about 5,000 students staged a sit-in on Garibaldi bridge, to protest the killing of their friend. The sit-in was later broken up by police. The ministry of the interior has banned all demos in Rome until may 31st.
