  • Description

Dragon boat races were held last Monday (8 June), watched by thousands of spectators.

This traditional regatta provides light-hearted entertainment, but also a chance for the best local oarsmen to display their skill.

Many of the crews had been practising for weeks beforehand. Their long boats, rowed by up to 50 oarsmen, cut through the water to the throbbing of drums and the clashing of cymbals.

As usual, one of the boats capsized and its crew had to swim to the finishing line.

The races recall the suicide by drowning of a Chinese poet-statesman, Chu Yuan, more than 2,000 years ago; he was driven to despair by unscrupulous rivals and a chief of state who would not listen to his advice. The races symbolise attempts to rescue him.
