    KENJI KIMIHARA, THE 26-YEAR-OLD CHAMPION JAPANESE MARATHON RUNNER HAD A RUNAWAY WIN IN THE WINDSOR-TO-CHISWICK MARATHON TODAY. KIMIHARA FINISHED FOUR MINUTES AHEAD OF THE REST OF THE FIELD.

    THE JAPANESE COVERED THE 26 MILES AND 385 YARDS IN TWO HOURS 15 MINUTES AND 15 SECONDS. THE RACE STARTED IN THE GROUNDS OF WINDSOR CASTLE. DESPITE HIGH TEMPERATURES KIMIHARA RAN AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE FIELD AFTER FOUR MILES.

    THROUGHOUT THE RACE HE HAD NO FURTHER CONTACT WITH THE REST OF THE RUNNERS AND AT THE END HE SAID HE HAD BEEN DISAPPOINTED WITH THE LACK OF BRITISH OPPOSITION. HIS PREVIOUS BEST TIME WAS TWO HOURS 13 MINUTES AND 33.4 SECONDS. HE TOLD NEWSMEN AFTER THE RACE HE HAD HOPED TO IMPROVE ON THIS.

    IT WAS KIMIHARA'S 9TH MARATHON AND HIS EIGHTH OVERSEAS. HE SAID HE HAD BEEN UNAFFECTED BY THE HEAT AND THAT THE COURSE WAS ONE OF THE EASIEST HE HAD TACKLED. SCOTTISH INTERNATIONAL MEL EDWARD LED THE WEAK BRITISH CHALLENGE. HE WAS SECOND, IN THE TIME OF 2:19:32. ENGLISHMAN ERIC AUSTIN WAS THIRD.

    THE RACE WAS BOYCOTTED BY THREE BRITISH STARS -- JIM ALDER, JIM HOGAN AND ROM HILL -- WHO SAID THE RACE DID NOT COUNT TOWARDS SELECTION FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN MEXICO CITY IN OCTOBER.
