  • Description

The Commander of Khmer Republic forces in besieged Kompong Cham said on Thursday (13 September) that 1,000 soldiers and civilians have been killed, and 5,000 wounded in the battle for the provincial capital.

The Commander, General Sar, estimated that some 2,000 insurgent troops had been killed or wounded in the battle. If the estimates are correct, the battle, that took place on September 5 and 6, will have brought the heaviest losses on either side during the three-and-a-half-year war.

Most of the casualties were sustained during house-to-house fighting. The General reported that two insurgent battalions were still entrenched in the University in the southern part of the city, but that the bulk of the insurgents had moved just outside the city's perimeter.

Most of the city's dead were buried in mass graves, dug by bulldozers, because of the fear of disease and epidemics breaking out.
