    THE NAME OF CAPTAIN J. VAN SCHUERBEEK WAS HONOURED OCTOBER 19TH AT THE ROYAL MILITARY SCHOOL IN THE ST. ANNE BARRACKS IN LAEKEN, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM; WHEN THE NEW INTAKE OF CADETS PARTICIPATED IN THE MOVING TRADITIONAL CEREMONY OF BEING BAPTIZED WITH THE NAME OF A FORMER CADET WHO GAVE HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY.

    AMONG THE MANY CADETS FROM BELGIUM AND FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT ARE A NUMBER OF CADETS FROM LEOPOLDVILLE.

    VAN SCHUERBEEK, WHO ENTERED THE MILITARY SCHOOL IN 1936 WAS A PRISONER OF WAR UNTIL 1940. BACK IN BELGIUM HE WORKED IN THE UNDERGROUND, WAS CAPTURED, AND SENTENCED TO DEATH IN BREENDOCK PRISON. HE COULD HAVE ESCAPED, BUT PREFERRED TO STAY AND HELP FRIENDS WHO LAY BURIED AMID THE RUINED CAUSED BY ALLIED FRIENDS WHO LAY BURIED AMID THE RUINED CAUSED BY ALLIED BOMBARDMENT. HE WAS LATER EXECUTED BY THE GERMANS.
