  • Description

Representatives of the world's four leading copper exporting nations began a three-day meeting in Paris on Thursday (26 November). The main topic at the meeting of the Inter-Governmental Committee of Copper Exporting Countries (CIPEC) is expected to be the present low international price of copper.

Those taking part in the conference are Mr. Orlando Cantuarias, the Minister of Mines of Chile; Zambian Finance Minister, Mr. John Mwanakatwe; General Fernandez Maldonado, Peru's Minister of Energy and Mines, and the Ambassador of Congo-Kinshasa to France, Mr. Mondi.

Among the CIPEC officials taking part in the discussions is Mr. Sacha Guerenik, the Executive Manager.

Sources at CIPEC headquarters would make no comment on whether any specific proposals to amend pricing and production policy would be discussed. But Mr. Canturias has said that his delegation will ask Peru, Zambia an d Congo-Kinshasa to agree on a joint policy to seek new markets for copper exports.

The mines of the four CIPEC countries, such as the Mulfulire mine in Zambia, account for 75 per cent of the world's copper exports.
