Background: Dr. Jonas Savimbi, the President of the National Union for Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), met the President of the Ivory Coast, M. Felix Houphouet-Boigny, for talks in the country's capital, Abidjan, on Thursday (12 June).
Dr. Savimbi, who leads one of Angola's three major liberation organisations, had arrived in the Ivory Coast on Wednesday (11 June). On his arrival at Abidjan airport he had told waiting newsmen that some 4,000 people had died in inter-African clashes in Angola last april.
He said "Independence is not far wary and no one can understand or explain the outbreak of clashes that have resulted in the loss of lives". According to official estimates, at least five hundred people were killed during the April clashes, and at least another two hundred have been killed in recent fighting in Angola.
Dr. Savimbi told the newsmen that he had come to seek advice from President Houphouet-Boigny in connection with the serious situation in angola. He regretted that the organisation of African Unity (OAU) had not been able to reconcile the leaders of the two rival Angolan liberation movements-the MPLA and the FNLA - during their fight for independence.
He said that past divisions had led to the present bad situation and that it was time a solution was found to bring the territory on the road to independence and unity.
