    ADMIRAL AMERICO TOMAZ, RE-ELECTED LATE LAST MONTH AS PRESIDENT OF PORTUGAL, TOOK THE OATH OF OFFICE AT AN INVESTITURE CEREMONY YESTERDAY AT THE LISBON PARLIAMENT PALACE.

    PRESIDENT TOMAZ, WHO HELD THE OFFICE FROM 1958, WILL CONTINUE NOW TO OCCUPY THE OFFICE FOR A FURTHER SEVEN YEARS. HE IS AGED SEVENTY.

    ADMIRAL TOMAZ WAS THE ONLY CANDIDATE IN THE ELECTION FOR THE PRESIDENCY CONDUCTED AMONG THE 585-MEMBER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTORAL COLLEGE.

    IN A SPEECH READ AT THE CEREMONY, PRESIDENT TOMAZ THANKED THE PEOPLE OF PORTUGAL FOR THEIR CONFIDENCE IN HIM. HE SAID HE HAD INTENDED RESIGNING AT THE END OF HIS FIRST TERM, BUT DECIDED TO STAND FOR RE-ELECTION BECAUSE "OF THE SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES OF WAR THROUGH WHICH PORTUGAL IS LIVING".

    REFERRING TO THE TROUBLES IN THE PORTUGUESE TERRITORIES IN AFRICA - ANGOLA AND MOZAMBIQUE - PRESIDENT TOMAZ SAID THE SACRIFICES INVOLVED IN THE FIGHTING THERE WERE DESTINED TO SAFEGUARD ESSENTIAL WESTERN INTERESTS.

    IT WAS NO EXAGGERATION, HE SAID, TO CLAIM THAT PORTUGAL WAS WORKING AND FIGHTING ABOVE ALL FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS AND THE STRUGGLE WOULD CONTINUE UNTIL PORTUGAL ACHIEVED IN VICTORY.

    BUT PORTUGAL DESIRED TO COLLABORATE WITH ALL COUNTRIES, ESPECIALLY HER NEIGHBOURS IN AFRICA, SAID PRESIDENT TOMAZ.
