  • Description

CALAIS, 25th April, 1966: President de Gaulle boarded a British-built Hovercraft at Calais today and went for a ten minute spin along the coast. The President, who was on the third day of his tour of Northern France, seemed well pleased with the trip. He described it as "wonderful", and Madame de Gaulle who went with him, said it was "great fun". The Hovercraft - named "Sure" - was one of two which are to operate a cross-Channel service this summer. They belong to a Swedish company, Hoverlloyd, but the three-man crew of the President's craft was all-British. During the ten minute trip they cruised at nearly sixty miles an hour - the speed at which the Hovercraft will cross the Channel. The service is expected to start on April 30th. The cost of a one-way ticket will be forty-five shillings.
