    British diplomat James Cross tasted freedom today (Friday) after two months as a kidnap hostage of Quebec extremists -- and his first words were of gratitude for the Canadian police and authorities who secured his release.

    While his kidnappers and members of their families were being flown to exile in Cuba, Mr. Cross spent the night in the custody of the acting Cuban Consul on the island site of the 1967 World Fair.

    When news came through that the Quebec Liberation Front kidnappers had safely reached Cuba, Mr. Cross was released and rushed to hospital. Police filmed Mr. Cross's first reaction to renewed freedom:
