    THE PAINTING, SENT FOR SALE BY INSURANCE CHIEF SIR BRIAN MOUNTAIN, WAS BOUGHT BY LONDON DEALER EDWARD SPEELMAN. IT WAS THE THIRD MAJOR REMBRANDT PORTRAIT SOLD AT CHRISTIE'S IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS AND FELL WELL BELOW THE RECORD OF GBP798,000 (1,915,200 U.S. DOLLARS) -- THE HIGHEST PRICE FOR A WORK OF ART IN EUROPE -- FOR REMBRANDT'S PAINTING OF HIS SON TITUS.

    TOP BIDDER MR. SPEELMAN SAID HE THOUGHT THE PICTURE "A VERY GOOD BUY AT THE PRICE". HE ADDED THAT HE THOUGHT HE MIGHT HAVE HAD TO GO CLOSER TO GBP420,000. (APPROX ONE MILLION U.S. DOLLARS).

    SIR BRIAN, WHOSE FATHER BROUGHT THE PORTRAIT FOR GBP7,000 (16,800 U.S. DOLLARS), AT CHRISTIE'S IN 1938, SAID HE WAS SURPRISED THAT THERE WERE NO AMERICANS IN THE BIDDING.
