  • Description

In New York and every other American town and city, campaigning is reaching fever pitch as supporters of Democratic candidate Senator George McGovern try to rally backing for his bid to evict Richard Nixon from the White House.

The Senator, and his running-mate Sergeant Shriver, are campaigning on a much smaller budget than the President has behind him. In the United States, money is a major factor in winning presidential elections, and the Democrats are handicapped because they cannot buy as much time as the Republicans to get their message across on radio and television. In all, about 390 million dollars (160 million pounds sterling) will be spent on campaigning for the Presidency, and the half-million other posts voted for at the same time.
