    In Nigeria, seven people died and 23 more were injured on Thursday (4 May) when an express train crashed near the town of Zaria in central Nigeria.

    The passenger train, travelling north from Port Harcourt to Kano, was derailed at a point between the towns of Sayi and Zaria in the early afternoon. Seven coaches were involved and four were completely derailed. Seven deaths were confirmed and 23 people were taken to hospital with injuries. Five were placed on the danger list. Rescue workers at the scene feared that more bodies and injured people might be found in the wreckage as the rescue operation continued. The passengers involved in the crash were travelling third class.

    As the rescue operation went on around the clock, the military governor of Kaduna State, where the crash occurred, Group Captain Mouktar Mohammed, the Emir of Zaria, Alhaji Shehu Idris and other officials, visited the scene of the crash. The governor later visited the hospital in nearby Zaria and spoke to the injured. The cause of the crash is not yet known and a technical inquiry has been set up by the Nigerian Railway Corporation on investigate. It will be headed by the Corporation's chief mechanical engineer.
