  • Description

Henry Chipembere, financial secretary of the Malawi Congress Party of Nyasaland, was charged at Blantyre Magistrates' Court, Nyasaland, Feb 1, with sedition and advocating violence. He pleaded not guilty.

A tape recording of a speech made by him was played in court; and such phrases as these were heard... "We are black, a black state, and in this black state only black man will govern. We know that we are going to find some Government servants and settlers participating in government. We know how to fix them. We will make sure that all the laws passed by that Government are laws wanted by Africans, and if they give us any nonsense they will get hell from us...We are a dangerous and terrible people. As we stand here our hearts are full of fury. Our hearts and heads are full of blood..."
Chipembere is defended by Mr. Elwyn Jones, Queen's Counsel. He is assisted by Mr. Sattar Sacranio, an Indian, legal adviser to the Malawi Congress Party. The case continues.
