    ABOUT 21,000 SWEDISH TEACHERS ENDED A THREE-DAY STRIKE ON WEDNESDAY. BUT 4,000 TEACHERS AND CIVIL SERVANTS IN KEY JOBS ARE CONTINUING THE STRIKE INDEFINITELY - WHICH AFFECTS MORE THAN HALF OF THE COUNTRY'S ONE MILLION SCHOOLCHILDREN.
    THE TEACHERS HAVE REJECTED DEMANDS FOR A LONGER ACADEMIC YEAR AS WELL AS AN OFFER OF A 15 PER CENT INCREASE AND 3,360 CROWNS (230 STERLING BASIC SALARY A MONTH FOR ASSISTANT SECONDARY SCHOOL MASTERS.
    THE STRIKE FOLLOWED A STATE LOCKOUT IMPOSED AFTER NEARLY 1,300 TEACHERS WENT ON STRIKE ON OCTOBER 11 OVER A WORK AND WAGES DISPUTE. BECAUSE OF THE STRIKE, MANY STUDENTS NOW EXPECT TO FAIL THEIR FINAL EXAMINATIONS, WHILE OTHERS FEAR THEY MAY HAVE LENGTHEN THEIR STUDIES BY A YEAR.
