  • Description

In the Hague on Christmas Eve (Thursday 24th December) members of the Dutch Jewish community held an evening protest service outside the Soviet Embassy. They were demonstrating against the harsh verdicts recently given against a number of Russian Jews who had stood trial in Leningrad for aircraft hi-jacking.

The protest was led by five senior Rabbis of the Jewish Society. Candles were placed at the roadside and special prayers were said. There was also singing and chanting in the candlelight.

As well as feeling the sentences at the trial were unnecessarily harsh, the demonstrators believe that Russian Jews, in general, do not get a fair trial. Although members of the Soviet staff in the Hague invited two of the Rabbis into the Embassy, the invitation was declined.
