  • Description

An exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the death of Charles Dickens, England's greatest novelist, is being held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London from Wednesday (10 June).

The nucleus of the exhibition is provided by the manuscripts texts and illustrations of Dickens' novels. The museum contains the largest known collection of his manuscripts, and these...with other related material.... wee a bequest from John Forster, Dickens' biographer and life-long friend. For the exhibition they've been augmented by further material which helps relate the author's work to its contemporary setting. No English writer has left so rich a picture of Early victorian England or exercised as deep an influence on the society of his day as Charles Dickens....who died on 9th June 1870 aged 58.

The special museum displays are open-sided rooms through which the public can wander. Each represents a different period of Dickens life and works, and has its characteristic mood.

More than a third of the 600 exhibits have been lent by private owners of institutions. The list of lenders is headed by the Queen who made available three paintings and a portrait drawing of Charles Dickens.
