  • Description

A clean-up operation started on Thursday (18 March) on the island of Ushant, off the northwest coast of France. Its shores have been polluted by the wrecked supertanker, Olympic Bravery.

Maritime officials said about five tonnes of fuel oil a day had leaked from the 275,000 ton tanker since it broke in half on Saturday (13 March) during heavy gales. It ran aground off Ushant on 24 January.

One hundred soldiers have been drafted into clean up a two-mile (three kilometre) stretch of rocky coastline on Ushant and three ships are using detergents to break up oil slicks at sea.

On Wednesday (17 March) a French navy helicopter, guiding two of the ships spreading detergent, crashed into the sea, killing its four-man crew. Two sailors have also been injured during the clean-up.

The Olympic Bravery was insured for GBP25 million sterling (50 million U.S. dollars) and its loss makes it has world's most expensive shipwreck.
