MR. IAN SMITH SUGGESTED ON SATURDAY THAT BRITISH AND RHODESIAN OFFICIALS, WHO HAVE BEEN CONDUCTING?

  • Description

MR. IAN SMITH SUGGESTED ON SATURDAY THAT BRITISH AND RHODESIAN OFFICIALS, WHO HAVE BEEN CONDUCTING INFORMAL TALKS IN SALISBURY, SHOULD GET ON WITH THE ACTUAL TALKS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

SPEAKING AT THE OPENING OF A DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH FETE IN THE AGRICULTURAL CENTRE OF MARANDELLAS, MR. SMITH WAS MAKING HIS FIRST PUBLIC REFERENCE TO THE TALKS FOR SOME WEEKS. HE SAID THAT THE OFFICIALS OF THE TWO COUNTRIES SHOULD - "STOP TALKING ABOUT TALKING, AND GET ON WITH TALKING".

MR. SMITH SAID THE FACT THAT ONE OF THE BRITISH DELEGATES IN THE ANGLO-RHODESIAN TALKS HAD RETURNED TO LONDON DID NOT MEAN THAT SNAGS HAD ARISEN. HE ADDED THAT THE TALKS WERE PROGRESSING ACCORDING TO PLAN.

THE HEAD OF THE ILLEGAL REGIME, SAID THAT IT SEEMED PRETTY OBVIOUS TO HIM THAT WHILE THE TALKS WERE MERELY "ABOUT TALKS" THEY WERE NEVER GOING TO GET TO GRIPS WITH THE PROBLEM. HE STRESSED TO A CROWD OF SOME 400 - "WE MUST NOT LOSE PATIENCE".

MR. SMITH ALSO SAID HE THOUGHT THAT ONLY HE, BUT ALL THE CIVILISED WORLD HOPED THE TALKS WOULD SUCCEED, BECAUSE REPERCUSSIONS WOULD REACH FAR BEYOND RHODESIA'S BORDER IF THEY FAILED.
