    The Indian Foreign Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Saturday (26 May) for a two-day visit aimed at strengthening ties between India and Syria. While in Damascus he discussed the Middle East situation with President Assad.

    SYNOPSIS: Damascus was the first port of call for Mr Vajpayee on a Middle East tour for discussions with Arab leaders on the recent Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. At the airport he was warmly greeted by the Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdul Halim Khaddam.

    After the greeting, the two man made their way to the President Palace, where Mr Vajpayee had a private session of talks with the Syrian President Lieutenant General Assad.

    Few details have been released about the substance of the talks. However it was reported that on meeting President Assad, Mr Vajpayee presented him with a personal letter from the Indian President Neelam Reddy.

    The two men then discussed the effects of the Middle East peace treaty and the current mood in the Arab world.
