Background: More than 50,000 farm workers demonstrated in Rome on Tuesday (9 November) against the system by which the land is owned and cultivated.

The demonstrators came from all over Italy by special coaches to take part in the protest.

Most of the country's agricultural workers have agreements with the landowners to pay them a percentage of the crop in return for the use of the land. The workers are now demanding that a fixed rent be put on the land and that they should be allowed to have full control over the land they work.

The demonstration, which was peaceful, was the largest by farm workers for some years.

SYNOPSIS: More than 50,000 farm workers marched through Rome on Tuesday to protest over the system by which the land is owned and cultivated. They had come from all over Italy by special coaches for the protest march, and, according to reports, marched quietly to the Piazza Navona to hear speeches.

The demonstrators complained that the present system of ownership domination was unfair. Landowners in Italy charge a percentage of the crop for the use of the land, but the agricultural workers hold that a fixed rent should be applied, enabling the workers to plant crops of their choice and to utilize the land according to their preference.

The march was sponsored by the agricultural branches of Italy's main left-wing unions, and went on peacefully.
