    WOMEN EVACUATED FROM THE REBEL-ATTACKED TOWN OF NIOKI YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) SPOKE OF REBEL ATTACKS ON THE AREA DURING WHICH THREE EUROPEAN MEN WERE KILLED. THE WOMEN, SIX FROM NIOKI AND TWO OTHERS AND TWO CHILDREN FROM NEIGHBOURING VILLAGES WERE FLOWN THE 325 KILOMETRES TO LEOPOLDVILLE IN A SMALL AIRCRAFT.

    TWENTY REBELS ATTACKED NIOKI, HELPED BY SOME OF THE CONGOLESE WORKERS AT THE FORESCOM TIMBER PLANT, THE TOWN'S MAIN INDUSTRY. THE REBELS KILLED 3 POLICEMEN AND WOUNDED 4 OTHERS. EUROPEANS DEFENDED THEMSELVES WITH LIGHT ARMS AND ESCAPED TO THE RIVER WHERE THEY MANAGED TO GET AWAY BY BOAT.

    THE WOMEN SAID 2 BELGIAN SOCIAL WORKERS AND 2 MISSIONARIES REPORTED MISSING HAD PROBABLY FOUND SHELTER WITH FRIENDLY CONGOLESE IN THE BUSH.

    THE REVIVAL OF REBEL ACTIVITY IN THE AREA HAS TRIGGERED OFF AN EVACUATION OF WHITES TO LEOPOLDVILLE. A PARTY OF 24 PORTUGUESE HAVE ARRIVED FROM INONGO; 17 OTHERS FROM KEMPA; AND MORE WHITES HAVE MOVED FOR SAFETY FROM BANNINGVILLE. SWEDISH PROTESTANT MISSIONARIES HAVE ALSO DECIDED TO LEAVE KONKEIA FOR A PLACE OF GREATER SAFETY.
