  • Description

Over a thousand Indians demonstrated outside the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi yesterday against the continuing American shipping of arms to Pakistan, while Calcutta was virtually paralysed by a 12-hour strike called in protest against the murder of a youth organisation leader. VISNEWS cameramen were there to record the events.

SYNOPSIS: More than one thousand people demonstrated in New Delhi on Friday in protest against the continuing shipping of United States arms to Pakistan. The demonstrators marched on the U.S. Embassy in Delhi with a police escort, but there were no reports of violence or arrests. The Embassy, meanwhile, admitted that arms may have been shipped to Pakistan despite a U.S. Government ban on such sales. But the Government was not aware that the arms were still being shipped until a press story earlier this week, the Embassy added.

On Thursday, the day before this demonstration, Indian Members of Parliament held a similar protest outside the Embassy. The U.S. Government, meanwhile, has promised to make further enquiries into the situation.

In Calcutta, capital of West Bengal, a general 12-hour strike was called by youth organisations in protest at the killing of a youth leader this week, Streets were almost deserted, motorists were halted by youths and asked to observe the strike, and shops and business shut up for the day. The West Bengal Government, meanwhile, was dissolved on Friday after declaring it could not cope with the rising Pakistan refugee problem and the continuing deterioration of law and order. Press reports say that the State could now be placed under direct Presidential rule from New Delhi--for the third time in three years.
