Nominees for best pictures were The Right Stuff, The Big Chill, The Dresser, Terms of Endearment and Tender Mercies. The Right Stuff, about the early days of the United States space programme, and the deeds of former astronaut John Glenn, received a total of eight nominations, despite its box office flop. The Big Chill, portraying middle-aged people reviewing their days of student activism, was also nominated for best supporting actress, Glenn Close. Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney were nominated as best actors for their performances in The Dresser, the tale of the relationship between an ageing actor and his eponymous assistant. Terms of Endearment was nominated for 11 awards, including best supporting actress, Debra Winger, and best supporting actor, John Lithgow, for their parts in the story of a mother-daughter relationship. Shirley MacLaine played the mother. Robert Duvall was expected to win best actor award for his role as a singer in Tender Mercies. Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and alexander, the story of the change in atmosphere in the lives of two children when their mother remarries after her husband's death, was expected to win best foreign film.
