Dick Tiger, the former world light-heavyweight boxing champion died in his Nigerian hometown after a brief illness today (Wednesday). He died in Aba, eastern Nigeria. This film, shot in May 1967, shows Tiger in New York in training for his world championship return with Jose Torres of Puerto Rica, from whom Tiger won the title six months earlier.
SYNOPSIS: Former would light-heavy weight champion Dick Tiger, shown here at his championship best in New York in 1967, died at home in Nigeria on Wednesday. He died amid the comfort of his family, in Aba, eastern Nigeria, after a brief illness.
Tiger won the Nigerian national middleweight title before going to Britain in 1955, where he won the British Empire middleweight title three years later. He than went on to be recognised by all boxing authorities as world middleweight champion. Tiger then captured the next title, becoming world light-heavyweight champion. By 1966, the Nigerian champion was double world champion. He was awarded the Medal of the British Empire. Dick Tiger returned to Nigeria this year as a boxing coach.
