  • Description

Israel's Cabinet met in Jerusalem today (Sunday, 14 March) to discuss the latest ideas of the Prime Minister, Mrs Meir, on changes in the country's borders. In an interview with a London correspondent the previous day Mrs Meir had suggested that Israel might return much of the West Bank to Jordan but would retain all Jerusalem, the Syrian Golan Heights and Sharm-el-Sheik at the tip of the Sinai peninsula. Rightist Members of the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, are strongly opposed to the proposals to withdraw from some occupied Arab territory.

The Cabinet meeting opened as heavy rain swept Jerusalem. By the time it finished there was thick snow in the streets outside. Unseasonable blizzards swept parts of the country, damaging citrus groves and driving three empty oil tankers ashore near Ashkelon in Southern Israel.
